A lock cruise offered in October includes a boxed lunch and a trip through a lock on the Muskingum River. Sightseeing and dinner cruises travel around Muskingum Island or Buckley Island in the Ohio River. The Belle of Louisville, a National Historic Landmark, sails from Louisville’s downtown Riverfront Park. Sightseeing, dinner and dance cruises, offered from May through October on the Belle, include live entertainment and narration by the captain.
Scenic Sailing
We were always tempted by the mouth-watering selection of homemade pies and slices of chocolate cake set out each day at lunch. I had been on voyages on the Mighty Mississippi River and even a couple in the Pacific Northwest on the Columbia and Snake rivers that traverse through Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. These itineraries are fairly well known, but I was fascinated to see what an Ohio River cruise was all about. I was happy to accept an invite from American Queen Voyages to review this special itinerary. St. Louis is often referred to as the “Gateway to the West.” Take in the Gateway Arch Riverfront, highlighted by the Gateway Arch, the largest man-made monument in the U.S. Enjoy St. Louis' many world-class attractions, including the Art Museum, Science Center, Anheuser-Busch Brewery, and the Missouri History Museum.
Choose a cruise that sounds fun to you, like a history tour, a meal on the water, or a special theme cruise. It’s a good idea to buy your tickets early, especially if you’re planning to go on a busy day or for a special event, so you can be sure to get the spot you want. Sailing from Newport Landing on the banks of the beautiful Ohio River, BB Riverboats offers lunch, dinner, kids and holiday cruises, plus many specialty cruises. In Cincinnati, you can hop on a riverboat cruise to see the city from the Ohio River in a special way. As you float along, these cruises give you a chance to learn about the city’s history right where it happened, enjoy live entertainment, and even dine on board.
Huntington, West Virginia
These boats, with their large paddle wheels, remind us of the old days when this river was a busy place for buying and selling goods and for people to talk to each other. When you hear the water splash against the side of the boat, it’s like hearing the tales of the early settlers, merchants, and dreamers who came to the area looking for new opportunities. As you cruise from the vibrant city of Cincinnati to the hometown Americana of Maysville, enjoy onboard activities such as trivia in the lounge or shuffleboard on the top deck. Or simply, relax on your private balcony and delight in the bucolic countryside and rolling river views. Discover Evansville, a delightful riverside city which is the perfect blend of modern and historic architecture. Evansville is home to Bally's Evansville, the state's first casino, as well as Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden, one of the state’s oldest and largest zoos.
Ship Tour
This exercise, coupled with the removal of some seating, will allow us to ensure every guest with a meal ticket has a table to sit at that properly allows them to socially distance. If you would like to sit outside (which we believe is the best seat in the house!) we ask you to take your own seating and place it in an area you feel comfortable with. We please ask you to keep every other guest in mind when you choose that location and adhere to a 6-foot distance between you and other guests. Curl up with a good book in one of our spacious lounges aboard the riverboat.
Plan Your Group Event
On your travels home, reflect upon your many wonderful adventures, or choose to explore more in the Gateway to the West. Wander along the landing to admire more than 50 murals which highlight the region’s rich history. Learn the importance of the town as headquarters for Civil War General Ulysses S. Grant as he embarked to secure Union control of the rivers.
And all the while, the Ohio River flows steadily, linking the city’s history together. The Ohio River flows nearly 1,000 miles from its headwaters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to its mouth on the Mississippi River at Cairo, Illinois. You'll find cruises that offer daytime sightseeing trips, but there are also cruises focusing on evening drinks. Meals are served in the main dining room and in the casual eatery called the Front Porch, which offers wonderful views as you cruise on the river.
Long known for steel manufacturing, Pittsburgh was an essential stop along the Ohio River for national and international commerce making it a wealthy town in the 18th and 19th centuries. Hear tales of famous Americans such as Heinz, Carnegie, and others who called this vibrant city home. Or stop by the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory to see how the famous baseball bats are made. A visit to the a local distillery will lift your spirits as you savor samples and learn about the history of Kentucky bourbons.

Listen as the captain guides your adventure with historic, fascinating commentary of our beautiful river city. Did you know that 1 out of every 4 steamboats that were built in the United States, were built right here in Cincinnati? They also have special trips like history tours, wine tastings, and evenings with jazz music. These cruises are more than just a trip on the river; they’re a way to really feel the local culture and have an experience you’ll always remember. Nowadays, going on one of these cruises lets you see Cincinnati’s old buildings and the new changes to the city from a different point of view. Being on the boat feels like stepping back in time and going on an adventure, as you learn about how the city has changed over the years.
Our team will help you plan the journey, menu and unique details to make your event a one-of-a-kind, unforgettable experience. In general, river cruising allows travelers the chance to explore on their own in a hassle-free way. It’s so easy to stroll onto and off of the ship at your leisure, and the towns and cities are mere steps away. You can go set your own schedule for the day if you’re not interested in rigorously following the ship excursion program. Be entertained on board by local musicians as you enjoy the afternoon rolling on the mighty Mississippi. The surrounding hillsides provide a handsome backdrop for this fascinating city which was the gateway to the West for the young United States.
Delight in a snapshot of small-town life here as children often gleefully splash in the waterfront fountains. While living here for almost two decades in the early 1800s, naturalist and artist John James Audubon created many of his extraordinary, Birds of America, masterpieces. Ask about our Current Savings and our Pre-Cruise Packages which include a premium hotel stay and transportation to the ship.
The dishes often include local flavors, giving you a taste of the area’s food traditions. To make the experience even better, live bands play music from jazz to bluegrass, showing off Cincinnati’s love for music. There are different types of riverboat cruises you can enjoy on the Ohio River. These cruises give you a great view of Cincinnati’s skyline and share stories about the city’s history.
From the ship’s landing, gaze upon the quaint town of Maysville, nestled into the hillside. Many of our trips provide convenient dry-land travel on board our “Hop-On/Hop-Off” buses. These buses (which look just like our ships!) travel alongside our cruises from port to port, so you’ll be able to take exciting shore excursions without the hassle of worrying about ground transport. Cruisers also enjoyed the process of watching our big riverboat pass through the locks along the way.
